The Ingenuity of CHiLO Book
Basically, CHiLO Book does not need a particular ebook reader. It works like this: upload CHiLO Book to the server then access it through the web browser to read. You can also use videos already uploaded on the internet such as YouTube to embed in the CHiLO Book. Some examples are shown in the demonstration below.
In the old version, you had to start from taking videos, then editing them and so on, but now you can use YouTube videos. Make sure that any of the videos you use from YouTube do not violate copywrites.
And again, CHiLO Book does not need a particular ebook reader.
The Interoperability of CHiLO Book
If you are using Mac, iBooks is the ebook reader. Some e-learning resources in ebook form request users to use specific ebook readers. CHiLO Book is an ordinary ebook, so you can use the ebook reader of your choice.
If you are using iBooks, drag it out, then import the epub format ebook.
If you are registering the ebook in the e-learning system Moodle, register it in a course as a file.
Modify the extension ”epub.” to “zip.” Extract “zip.” Then “index.xhtml.” file will appear. Choose it and click “Set to main file.”
Set the [Appearance] to “Pop-up” and click [Show more…]. Set Pop-up width to 1024 and height to 768 in pixels. Now you will be able to see the CHiLO Book that you saw on iBooks on the browser.
This is our patent-pending capsule technology. As you can see, CHiLO Book is a standard EPUB3 format ebook you can register in iBooks Store and Google Play. Using our advanced technology, we have created CHilLO Book readable on Moodle as an ebook.
Next, I will show you the many ways to read CHiLO Book with browsers.
For instance, you can register CHiLO Book on Facebook, using the Facebook group as a community to study. The series “Nihongo Starter,” is released for foreigners learning the Japanese language for the first time. At the beginning of each week, we post messages like “This week’s assignment is …” and participants will follow. It was a new challenge for us to use SNS platforms instead of LMS but this approach verified that there is no need for LMS.
About External Resources
CHiLO Book can be created using YouTube videos. The CHiLO Book shown above is created from the lecture video of TIES Symposium held in 2017 uploaded on YouTube. As you can see, there is a video showing on the upper part of the page and explanation texts below it. Take a closer look at the video. You can see the YouTube logo.
Up until now, you had to embed original videos on to CHiLO Book. This is the latest version using YouTube videos. The video shown here is open on YouTube. As you can see, this video is cut at 2 minutes and 21 seconds. You can specify the split point of the video by entering the split point in seconds on the index Excel sheet. For example, say there is a 30-minute YouTube video, and you want the 10-second to 20-second part of the video to show on the first page, and 20-second to 30-second part on the second page, the video will start to play automatically at the specified point as you turn the pages of the CHiLO Book.
There are four types of videos you can embed in CHiLO Book: MP4, YouTube, edited short videos, and Excel split videos. The easiest way is to use YouTube videos and cut them specifying the splitting point on Excel. As you can see, creating one is not as difficult as it seems.
