Let’s see how competent microcontent is.
The slide shows the result of the demonstration experiment conducted by Microsoft for developing computer games to see how many seconds college-aged students and millennials can concentrate. In the 2000s they were able to focus for 12 seconds. But in 2013, it dropped to 8 seconds. Goldfish are said to have an ability to concentrate for 9 seconds, so the younger population have less attention span than goldfish!
The chart on the upper right shows the result of how long people browse web pages. The university professors’ research results show that 50% of the viewers move on to the next page within 10 seconds. This phenomenon is not only about college-aged students but also for ourselves. We even surf from one page to another picking up information that interests us. So, instead of being pessimistic saying that people nowadays have less power to concentrate, say that we are daily trained to pick up necessary information more speedily.
The chart on the lower right shows the result of a collaborative experiment conducted by Sankei Shinbun, a Japanese newspaper company, and Tezukayama University. We were testing whether releasing university lectures online is valid in higher education. The viewing time hit the peak at one minute.
As these data show, contents of about one minute are said to be the best for reading on the web.
Providing microcontent to education enables you to concentrate on studying with a short amount of time, study in small pockets of time, create contents relatively easily, and it is fit for mobile learning. Also, recently the last point is repeatedly said: “Learn according to interests and levels by combining ebooks.”
If you create one CHiLO Book as one academic course unit (CU) or one class, studying 15 CHiLO Books will equal to a year’s lecture or 2 academic credits.
The reason why we split the contents into pieces is that it will be easier to combine the ebooks to create an original course fit for each student. As you can see in MOOC or MIT, micro-credentials are becoming the main stream in the world of online education.
